For offer, a rare and interesting book set! Fresh from a prominent estate in Upstate NY. Vintage, Old, Original - NOT a Reproduction - Guaranteed !! A critical and practical elucidation of the Book of Common Prayer, and administration of the sacraments, and other rites and ceremonies of the church, according to the use of the United Church of England and Ireland. By the late John Shepherd, M.A. Minister of Pattiswick, Essex. London : F. C. and J. Rivington, 1817. 2 vol. Complete. Stated on t.p.: Twelve copies only printed on colored paper. Perhaps the 12 copies were for the elite, such as the king, queen, or other royalty. Besides the lsit of subscribers, there is also a list of those ommited, in mansucript. Interesting. No expense was spared in the exquisite binding of this set. Tooles, straight grained morroco, highly decorated with gil; moire / silk endpages with gilt. Gilt page edges all the way around. Set is in excellent condition. Some wear to binding - see photos for more detail. Gilt page edges have some wear and a few marks. Interiors quite nice.  An interesting note on the paper. The following watermarks appear in the paper: Cobb Patent, 1797, and Cobb Patent, 1808. "Cobb" paper - A paper named after Thomas Cobb, an English papermaker, who introduced it about 1800. The paper is thin, finely textured, wove, and generally somewhat drab in color, and subject to considerable stretching when wet. During the first half of the 19th century it was used extensively for the covers of "boarded" books, and large quantities were used for the endpapers of economy leather bindings in the last half of the 19th centuryMy research found a Coloured English intaglio printing paper “Trade card: Thomas Cobb, c. 1800 ... Cobb made significant contributions to the manufacture of colored paper.”“Colour’d Paper, by the Kings Patent to Thomas Cobb, Printing ...Paper ...
